Beijing will hold the Olympic games in starting on the auspicious date
of 8th August 2008. This is seen as being an opportunity to relaunch
Beijing (and so 'New' China) and is expected to generate a huge amount
of interest in this city worldwide.
There are several books which photographically cover this city but almost
all focus on the common tourist sites and more crucially for this project,
focus on day time photography. However, Beijing actually looks better at
night (!) and in many respects is as vibrant a place at night as during
the day.
The concept of this book would be to divide the nights up into several parts
PART 1 - DUSK - to feature:
- flag lowering ceremony at Tianmen Square
- commute home and traffic chaos
- some rare sunsets and dusk shots
- The shutting of tourist sites - dusk in Beijing's plentiful parks
PART 2 - EVENING TO MIDNIGHT - to feature:
- bars, restaurants; the city teams with them full of colour, lanterns,
lights and neon
- many famous attractions well lit at this time.
- night markets and food street
- in the summer months many people still in the parks - dancing etc...
PART 3 - DEAD OF NIGHT - to feature:
- a few hours of relative peace in this city of 15 million -
familiar places with few people
- some of the more well known sites at night without the glaring
lights and throngs of people
- the peace of the hutongs in the early hours.
- the Great Wall moonlit. emphasis on peace and tranquility
PART 4 - DAWN - to feature:
- new day - hutong wakes up always early
- sunrise over the Great Wall
- park exercises, Tai Chi and martial arts
- flag raising ceremony in Tianmen Square - New China awakes to a New Day.
Christian Stanley - the photographer. British, based in Beijing for 10
years. Knows the city very well and has good contacts to see as much of
the city and gain access to places a casual visitor wouldn't be able to.
